Evaluation Question 5: How did you attract/address your target audience?

 How did you attract/address your target audience?

It is very important to carry out secondary research into existing films because it allows you to gather new and more information to help you attract the right target audiences that other films have already accomplished.

From my research into thrillers, i believe that the target audience that they appeal to consist of the following:
Age: 15- 40
Gender: Both males and females
Ethnicity: All ethnicities
Occupation: Mainly students but also older people who interest thrillers with any occupation
Hobbies & interest: Thrillers tend to target people who are socialising and thriller seeker and also those who interest the horror genres and other sub genres that can be part of the thriller genre.

From observing other secondary research, I believe that the target audience for thriller films lies within the age group 15-35 and that is suitable for both genders. Also, thrillers are mainly targeted more towards the younger viewers that are able to watch thrillers and that are very interested in thrillers and the horror like genres.

I believe that the thriller audiences enjoy the conventions such as tension building, good vs evil, the explicit content and many other factors that the thriller genre uses to engage their audience. As we are recreating the thriller conventions, we had to ensure that we follow these conventions in order to address the right target audience and their expectations.

In order to fulfil this, I had to create a questionnaire asking people about what attracts the viewers when watching a thriller film. This was beneficial to my decision making because it allowed me to know what peoples interests were when watching a thriller so I could portray those interests in my film in order to attract viewers. Here are some of questions I had asked to 20 people;

One question i asked was ''what types of thriller genres interests you?''. This was key to when it came to planning my own thriller as it gave me a start to what i was actually creating. This also allowed me have a focus on a certain target audience of psychological thriller fans.

Another question i asked was ''what type of location do your prefer in a thriller''. This was also key as it allowed me know what the majority of people liked when it came to the setting. The most preferred was ''Hospital''. This was most appropriate to a psychological thriller making it match to the most preferred sub genre thriller.

Another key question i had asked was ''Should the protagonist/antagonist be male or female''. This was key because it allowed me to see what was most favoured by the audience when it came to what gender should the antagonist or protagonist be. This helped with the character selection of my production.

The types of questions i asked were based on the main question ''What appeals to you most in a thriller film?''. The questions i asked all related back to this main question and informed me on regards to what i was making. Within the majority of the people i questioned, i found out that a psychological sub genre thriller was most favoured, there fore this informed me into making a psychological thriller. This research then allowed me to plan what conventions i could use that were typical to these types of genres.

After my production had been completed, i created a focus group targeting the ages of 15+. I then asked 20 people to watch my thriller and write down their feedback on their views on the film.

Here are some of the comments i have collected;

Joanna (Female, 18) '' i really liked it, the story was unique and was really interesting." This comment let us know that our thriller was a success and pleased the viewer.

Anson( Male, 17) "Sick! a bit confusing but in the end i got it. overall it was good" This made us go over our film and made us understand what wasn't as clear and what could be changed in order to make the viewers understand our narrative.

These comments helped me in making a conclusion that i had attracted my targeted audience as the comments were positive and i had received the types positive comments and feedback that were ideal.
